John Dunn is a 21-year-old junior majoring on the pre-med track at Hanover College. Originally from Louisville, Ky., he is a biology major with a Kinesiology and Integrative Physiology minor and he hopes to earn his doctorate in genetics and epidemiology.
When I asked him why he chose the medical field, he said that he grew up with it. His mom and his uncle are doctors and his two sisters are nurses. However, the main reason is that John is very passionate about helping people. He wants to study genetics in the hopes of someday fixing mutations and health defects. He would also like to become a part of Doctors without Borders.
Why Hanover?: John knew his entire life that he wanted to attend Hanover College. A lot of his family went here, and he loved the campus and small class sizes. He felt like Hanover was a good school to grant him connections to use later in life. John was also attracted here by the hands-on biology program and the ability to do one-on-one research.
Like every other incoming freshman, he had a few fears about living away from home and attending college. Even though John watched his sisters begin college with many of the friends they had made in high school, he only knew of three people and a cousin who were attending Hanover during his freshman year.
John pushed the fear of not knowing anyone at this school into the back of his mind, however, and was able to meet many new people.
Involvement: John is a senior resident assistant, a biology tutor in the Learning Center, a brother of Sigma Chi, a Benjamin Templeton Scholar and a Peer Advisor for Hanover 101. He enjoys all of these activities because he is able to fulfill one of his life’s ambitions to help others, whether it is with understanding a biology concept or helping keep his residents in line.
Extra, Extra: John’s two favorite movies are “The Lion King” and all of the “Star Wars” movies (but particularly numbers four to six).
His two favorite television shows are “How I Met Your Mother,” followed by “The Big Bang Theory.” If he could live anywhere in the world he would either like to live in Italy, where his family is from and where he enjoyed traveling to last May term, or Seattle, where he could enjoy great coffee and music. Three words that he says describe him are: helpful, intelligent and easy-going.
Fav Quote: “If you can’t find a way, make one.”
Fun Fact: John is a direct descendent of Pocahontas.
Advice to prospective students: “Go into things with an open mind. Like in ‘Forrest Gump,’ “Life is like a box of chocolates, you never know what you’re gonna get.”
