Phew…what a couple of weeks I have had! I have been fighting a nasty cold that eventually turned into bronchitis and have been confined to my apartment for the larger part of two weeks. I hate being sick, but I really hate being sick when I am in a new city.
Lucky for me and thanks to my military insurance, I was able to go to the hospital right across the street from my work. It also happens to be the same hospital that the President goes to for his yearly checkups or when he is under the weather. Just another reason why I love D.C.!
I did manage to make it to the Equality March, my first march/rally in D.C., and it was crazy to say the least. There were so many people packed onto the lawn of the Capitol building. I got to listen to some awesome speakers and get involved in something that was for a worthwhile cause. It was also a little thrilling to turn on the national news networks or look at their websites and see the rally that I was just attended.
Speaking of being on television. I don’t know if anyone is a big fan of “Big Love,” but I just happened to be at the White House when they were filming and got to be in some of the background shots. I know that a lot of shows are supposed to be set in the D.C. area but very few are actually filmed here so it was really cool to see a show being filmed in front of me. I felt like a complete tourist by calling my parents and telling them in my most excited voice what I had just seen. Yeah, it was definitely a tourist moment.
While at the rally I spent some time photographing the Capitol, the Library of Congress and the Supreme Court. I have to say that the Capitol building is incredibly intimidating when you are right in front of it. The television does not do it justice. To say that it is huge is an understatement. It definitely speaks to the power that it holds within.
If you visit, take your time and really appreciate the architecture and its position as the center of Washington’s political power. I have yet to go inside the Capitol or the Supreme Court, but I do plan on going on tours or visiting before I leave D.C. That’s another nice thing about some of the government buildings here is that they are open to the public and you can go in and tour around. There are some sections that are blocked off but for the most part they are pretty open. Just make sure that you do some research before you visit a building so that you know if you can just walk around or if you have to be part of a tour group.
More to come from your Washingtonian!
